So we had to leave the transient dock yesterday morning, as it is mainly for pumping out waste, refilling water tanks, etc. Only to find that some yahoo had tied up to our mooring. So we used the time for my lessons in steering the boat. From 10am to 4pm we wandered between Warren and Bristol trying to find somewhere to tie up. The river current was way too strong for me, though, in Bristol, so I couldn't grab the mooring. I tried using the hook, which pulls the ropes up for you to tie to the mooring. However, ours started to bend and finally snapped

Then, the Hereschoff launch tried to assist me by bringing over their hook, which I barely grabbed. I started to pull the rope up, had it within two inches of my outstretched fingers, and then the damned thing telescoped out... rather than have a repeat, I let go and we told them that it was no good. Finally, we got approval from the harbormaster to tie up at the transient mooring in Warren, across from the dock. Which I had a simple time of, actually. I was so down on myself because I'd had such difficulty pulling up the ropes for our main mooring. Turns out that our mooring shouldn't be this difficult to tie to, and that the ropes and chains must be caught underwater. Because, basically, a mooring ball is connected by chain to a weight on the bottom of the river. Also connected to the bottom of a mooring ball should be a rope with two looped heads, which is held afloat by a small buoy. Sometimes the buoy has a pickup stick at the top, which I prefer, having short arms. I should be able to easily pull this buoy onto the bow of the boat, grab the attached ropes, and secure them to either side.

Now that we are back here, we still have the issue of not having a dinghy to get to shore, though. The lady who'd offered to let us borrow hers never came by on Saturday. Today we are supposed to hear from P. the guy renting the mooring to us, who will sell us an inflatable with attached outboard motor so we can get to shore.

Medically, I'm not doing well. As I'm the only one sick on board, it looks more like a food issue and not seasickness, although the first 24 hrs brought on a bad case of vertigo. Yesterday's rough waters made me quite nauseous but I had to heave and return to my post. I'm not prepared for the physical rigors of boating. I feel so stupid and clumsy most of the time, but I am doing well.
